ViaLight helps pave the way for future planetary exploration

At the end of June, ESA BIC Bavaria alumni ViaLight successfully conducted a series of tests using its proven high-rate laser communication technology to prove the feasibility of satellite-to-surface links for robotic exploration. The link was established between ViaLight's miniature laser terminal (MLT-20) and DLR's Transportable Optical Ground Station (TOGS) at a distance of 145 km. The success of these tests further cements the reputation of ViaLight's technology and continues to pave the way for further spacecraft terminal developments. Read more.

ViaLight Communications GmbH
ViaLight Communications (VLC) is a spin-off company of the German Aerospace Center DLR, founded in 2009. VLC develops and manufactures innovative high-rate laser communication systems (>1Gbps) for aerial applications. The MLT-20 is an extremely compact flight terminal (<5kg) for smaller uav and helicopter platforms. the mlt-100 is capable of transmitting large data volumes between high-flying airship platforms and aircraft over distances of up to 600 kilometres, thus facilitating the creation of networks above the clouds.

VLC's target markets consist of customers who need to transmit large amounts of data (>1Gbps) in real time from flight platforms - an impossible feat for conventional radio communication systems (typically <10mbps).

ESA Business Incubation Centre Bavaria
Vialight was incubated at the ESA BIC Bavaria from July 2010 to June 2012. The ESA BIC Bavaria seeks entrepreneurs using space technologies in a non-space environment. That doesn't mean rocket science, but applies to multiple application fields such as navigation and positioning, communications techniques, Earth observation, materials, processes, signals or robotics.

ESA's Business Incubation Centre Bavaria was launched in 2009 and is since managed by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO). ESA BIC Bavaria and its renowned partners - DLR, Airbus Defense and Space, Fraunhofer IIS and Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft Berchtesgadener Land - provide startups with financial and technical support at four branch offices: Oberpfaffenhofen, Ottobrunn, Nürnberg and Berchtesgadener Land.
